In this country where this depresses and degrades and the civil society has become warped due to a populism that is seriously undermining the very institutions, there are very few public figures worthy of a ' considerable moral authority. One of these is the emeritus president Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, who for the celebrations of 150 years of the unification of Italy, has had with the Deputy Director of Il Sole 24 Ore, Alberto Orioli, a long conversation whose views are published in "Not the country of my dreams" (The Assayer). A series of comparisons between today's Italy, where no one has the courage to fly high with civil passion and confidence in the ideals of the Risorgimento and Italy, the Resistance and the Constitution: a comparison from which came a clear opinion, full of bitterness . The confession of crosses Ciampi pageants (important and substantial than the dreams of visionaries and more modern "European spirit" Cavour and Mazzini with an analysis of country between the elite and birthplace of the people) and personal memories with some of the portraits the large country. The chairman emeritus sees his reflection in the interweaving ancient vices of our political class which is the source of any exasperation. A constant of Italian politics that today is all the more because of the spread of degenerative scandals that do not bother anybody, conflicts of interest that are never resolved and a political struggle incarognita as it is based on intrigue and low blows. But, in my opinion, the best part of the book is that time of restlessness Ciampi on the eve of celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of "a nation that would seek and the reasons for projecting his stay together in Europe" and that instead lost behind the Bossi's secessionist foo. In this case the memory is clear and sharp as lived by Ciampi in first person and tells us what we need to beware and fear the raids in the Lega constitutional fabric. And so the story of when Bossi, convinced that "Italy at the pound" would not be able to join the club of the single currency, bet exclusion "to unleash the ultimate plunge separatist" and create the Po Valley and he did know shamelessly to the Minister of Economy. E 'to be appreciated however that the analysis of Ciampi never expires invective (I had been there in its place were a string of oaths, rebukes and anything else to Lumbard leaguers and all!) And even at the end of conversation Orioli can be seen with even a glimmer of hope given by the hope that young people can change the course of things.
